I LOVE the classes! They really push me and I can really see the progress I am making each time since I started as a beginner.

Race Hub is home to a fantastic studio of Wattbike indoor cycles which will transform the way you train. Developed in association with British Cycling and used by top athletes and sports clubs, Wattbikes are the only indoor cycle to ‘feel’ like  riding a real bike and at the same time deliver accurate, consistent performance data and technical feedback.

We are passionate about the benefits Wattbike can bring to your training. It’s why the cycling, triathlon and fitness worlds have been so excited! Discover Wattbike today at Race Hub.

I can train effectively through the winter – it is so much better than my turbo trainer or icy roads!

We have a range of coached group classes for individuals to book, run by a qualified Wattbike instructor.
Group training can be incredibly motivating and great fun as well as pushing you to get the most from your session.

The Wattbike Studio at Race Hub

The Wattbike allows everyone from complete beginners to elite athletes to experience the same ultimate training tool!  The Wattbike is increasingly the training tool of choice for athletes other than cyclists and triathletes, with rugby players, track and field athletes and many more using the Wattbike to optimise performance gains.

The Wattbike studio is available for individuals to book a class or ‘free ride’ session but we also take bookings from clubs, squads and teams for group sessions, with or without an instructor.  Please contact us directly to discuss the specific needs of your group.

Regular gym wear is fine, bear in mind that you are likely to get very hot during sessions.  A pair of cycling shorts with an chamois (padded!) will greatly add to your personal comfort during the session.

You can use regular trainers (with toe cages) but we recommend hard soled cycling shoes and all our Wattbikes come with reversible SPD pedals accepting both a standard shimano SPD and Look Keo cleats.

Don’t forget to bring:

Your cycling shoes

A towel (mandatory!)

Drinks bottle

We recommend that you book a 40 minute ‘induction’ during which we will cover the basics to allow you to get the most from your class or individual booking.  Your instructor will take you through the following:

  • Bike set up and personal sizing*
  • Bike familiarisation including bike numbers, data and pedalling technique
  • 3 minute aerobic test to establish individual training zones.

*we recommend you bring the measurements from your own bike / bike fit to optimise comfort and training specificity on the Wattbike.

You can book an induction by emailing [email protected].

As a minimum, you will need to complete an online video induction to familiarise you with the Wattbike and monitor to allow you to use the equipment safely and get the most from your session. Click here for the online induction (coming soon!)

You must book and prepay online. You can do this through our website or Facebook page. On your first booking you will be asked to create an account and after that you will be able to login to view, manage and book sessions quickly and easily. You can book up to 7 days in advance and can cancel up to 24hrs in advance (cancellations/no-shows after this time will not be refunded for the session).

You can pay for sessions and classes individually or bulk buy at a discounted rate (see pricing). To bulk buy – please select the class or session you wish to book from the booking widget and the option to book individually or bulk buy sessions will be offered. If you select to bulk buy, remaining classes/sessions will be saved on your account for future use (valid for 6 months). Please note, open sessions and classes have separate bulk buy options/prices and cannot be transferred.

For group bookings please contact [email protected] or call 07482 307458 for discounted rates and availability.

Wattbike Testing

In years gone by, fitness testing has been reserved for sport science laboratories, where a qualified sport scientist is on hand to tell you every single detail about your ride. But, as an amateur athlete, you may have little opportunity to visit a sport science facility, which means you could be missing out on essential information which could help you implement a more effective training plan.

The benefits of cycling testing

Testing could open up a new world of measuring and analysing performance. Read on to find out how testing can help you:

  1. Train more effectively
  2. Monitor changes in your fitness
  3. Measure the effectiveness of your training plan

What is it: The submaximal ramp test is designed to gives a benchmark level of fitness and can be used to estimate maximum minute power (MMP) and maximum heart rate (MHR).  This test will allow us to establish your specific and individual training zones, which can be used on the Wattbike or on the road if you have a heart rate monitor and/or power meter.

When to use it: If you’ve not tested before, but you’re exercising on a regular basis, this is the first test you should attempt. It will provide all the benchmark figures you need to start analysing your performance.

We have two protocols depending on your current level of fitness / experience.

The 1hr session will include a 20 minute warm up and the test (20 minutes), plus cool down and bike set up.

What is it: Functional Threshold Power (FTP) is becoming widely used in the cycling world as an increasing number of cyclists are using power to guide and monitor their training and their performance-related capacities. When correctly measured FTP is an intensity that is similar to a blood lactate threshold, which in turn has been found to be highly predictive of performance in a range of endurance events and distances. FTP is an intensity that represents the ability to sustain the highest power output possible over 45 to 60 minutes, depending upon an individuals’ trained status. As a result 95% of the 20-minute average power is used to determine the FTP.

FTP can be most practically and reliably measured by carrying out a 20 minute time trial on the Wattbike and recording the associated power and heart rate. With this test, it is essential that the highest effort than can be sustained for the whole test is achieved. A successful test is one where at the end of the 20 minutes, the effort given has been maximal, and if paced correctly exercise could not be continued for any longer. The last few minutes of the test should be extremely challenging and large amounts of concentration and will-power used to keep going at the same intensity.

When to use it: Not only can regular assessments of FTP help provide you with an indication of whether you are improving your performance-related abilities, but it also provides a very good functional ‘landmark’ from which to base cycling-specific training zones.

This test is recommended for experienced cyclists only.  We recommend you consult your GP before undertaking any ‘maximal effort’ tests.

The 1hr session will include a 20minute warm up and the test (20 minutes), plus cool down and bike set up.
