Wattbike Testing

In years gone by, fitness testing has been reserved for sport science laboratories, where a qualified sport scientist is on hand to tell you every single detail about your ride. But, as an amateur athlete, you may have little opportunity to visit a sport science facility, which means you could be missing out on essential information which could help you implement a more effective training plan.

The benefits of cycling testing

Testing could open up a new world of measuring and analysing performance. Read on to find out how testing can help you:

  1. Train more effectively
  2. Monitor changes in your fitness
  3. Measure the effectiveness of your training plan

What is it: The submaximal ramp test is designed to gives a benchmark level of fitness and can be used to estimate maximum minute power (MMP) and maximum heart rate (MHR).  This test will allow us to establish your specific and individual training zones, which can be used on the Wattbike or on the road if you have a heart rate monitor and/or power meter.

When to use it: If you’ve not tested before, but you’re exercising on a regular basis, this is the first test you should attempt. It will provide all the benchmark figures you need to start analysing your performance.

We have two protocols depending on your current level of fitness / experience.

The 1hr session will include a 20 minute warm up and the test (20 minutes), plus cool down and bike set up.

What is it: Functional Threshold Power (FTP) is becoming widely used in the cycling world as an increasing number of cyclists are using power to guide and monitor their training and their performance-related capacities. When correctly measured FTP is an intensity that is similar to a blood lactate threshold, which in turn has been found to be highly predictive of performance in a range of endurance events and distances. FTP is an intensity that represents the ability to sustain the highest power output possible over 45 to 60 minutes, depending upon an individuals’ trained status. As a result 95% of the 20-minute average power is used to determine the FTP.

FTP can be most practically and reliably measured by carrying out a 20 minute time trial on the Wattbike and recording the associated power and heart rate. With this test, it is essential that the highest effort than can be sustained for the whole test is achieved. A successful test is one where at the end of the 20 minutes, the effort given has been maximal, and if paced correctly exercise could not be continued for any longer. The last few minutes of the test should be extremely challenging and large amounts of concentration and will-power used to keep going at the same intensity.

When to use it: Not only can regular assessments of FTP help provide you with an indication of whether you are improving your performance-related abilities, but it also provides a very good functional ‘landmark’ from which to base cycling-specific training zones.

This test is recommended for experienced cyclists only.  We recommend you consult your GP before undertaking any ‘maximal effort’ tests.

The 1hr session will include a 20minute warm up and the test (20 minutes), plus cool down and bike set up.
